On March 13th, IAB hosted a member company briefing with Giuseppe Abbamonte, Director for Media Policy at the European Commission, during his recent visit to Washington, DC. For several years, the European Commission has been working to promote the creation and distribution of content and news in Europe by updating the EU’s audiovisual and copyright legislative frameworks to ensure they are “fit for purpose” in the digital era. As Director of Media Policy, Guiseppe Abbamonte is tasked with developing and implementing this ambitious agenda.
During the IAB briefing, Mr. Abbamonte provided an update of the copyright reform legislation that is pending before the European Parliament. The legislation would require website owners to take “effective and proportionate” measures to prevent copyright material from being uploaded to their websites by users, among other changes. IAB members also discussed the European Commission’s efforts to combat disinformation – including a progress report on the EU Code of Practice on Disinformation, in which IAB Europe has been a leading contributor.
