A LOOK BACK — A STEP FORWARD
What a year! In June, IAB members and guests celebrated the association’s first birthday at a party hosted by CNET. By all accounts, it was a great way to wrap up an extraordinary year that was highlighted by many important accomplishments. We grew from a 40-member core to an organization with more than 200 companies involved in all aspects of the Internet advertising industry. Currently the IAB is comprised of Internet media companies (58%); advertising agencies (10%); ad management product/service providers (8%); research and ad measurement providers (8%); ad networks and sales rep organizations (4%); and a host other companies, including marketing consultants, website developers, technology providers, accounting firms, legal counselors, and executive recruiters.

Here are some of the year-one achievements:

  • Established the IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Reporting Program – a quarterly reporting program based on actual sales revenues, administered by Coopers & Lybrand.
  • Issued the first Voluntary Banner Guidelines for Web banner advertising in partnership with the Coalition for Advertising Supported Information & Entertainment (CASIE).
  • Published “Why the Web? The Case for Internet Advertising,” distributed to over 90,000 media and advertising executives, as well as Fortune 500 CEOs.
  • Formulated “Metrics and Methodology,” a Web ad tracking and reporting standards document, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Media Measurement Task Force.
  • Fielded the Internet Effectiveness Study which is the largest advertising effectiveness study ever undertaken. Designed to quantify the brand building effect of Internet advertising, the report will be released within the next 60 days.
  • Began communicating with members and industry via our website
    www.iab.net.

We’re excited to be building on this momentum, as we continue theĀ IAB’s industry-leading work.

FALL CONFERENCE SCHEDULED IN NEW YORK

Mark your calendar for Wednesday, December 11. That’s when the IAB will host its 1997 Fall General Meeting at Internet World in New York City.

The IAB Leadership Dinner in June drew so much praise that we’re bringing it back. The Fall Leadership Dinner is scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, December 10, with keynote speaker Mary Modhal, analyst at Forrester Research. She will present exclusive industry information to IAB members.

The day-long schedule of events for December 11 will include:

  • IAB Board of Directors elections
  • Association and project updates
  • A keynote luncheon
  • Panel discussions with industry leaders
  • Presentations on important online advertising issues
  • An open forum for Q & A
  • Board induction dinner

Details on election and registration procedures will be presented in
next month’s newsletter.
SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS — MEMBER SURVEY UNDERWAY
Our goal is to better serve our members, so we want to hear your thoughts about the IAB. We have hired an independent research consultant to implement a random phone survey of members starting the week of August 11.

If you are called, we hope that you will take a few minutes out of your day to share your insight on how the IAB has performed in the past and where you feel the organization should focus its efforts. Your input will strengthen the organization and enable us to offer the support and information you need.

WEBSITE SPEAKS TO THE ORGANIZATION
If you haven’t seen the IAB website, take the time to check it out at www.iab.net and see what is happening at your organization. Member companies are featured on TickerLINX (TM) and in the membership area.

Members can also find valuable information on upcoming meetings/conferences, association activities and selected articles from the recent advertorial. To make communications even easier, the IAB plans to offer a proprietary password system that will enable us to post the quarterly Internet Advertising Revenue Reporting Program and monthly newsletter for members’ convenience.

1997-98 MEMBERSHIP INVOICES IN MAIL
Invoices for the 1997-98 year are in the mail. We’re excited to report that because of the incredible backing of our members, we are able to maintain membership fees at the same rates as last year. If your company joined at the beginning of the 1997 calendar year, you will receive a credit.

We appreciate your support and look forward to continuing to serve our members.

PLUS ONE PROGRAM OPEN TO MEMBERS
The IAB is pleased to announce the introduction of “Plus One.” This program enables multiple representatives from member companies to receive communication materials distributed by the IAB and keeps everyone well-versed about the IAB’s activities. Cost is $100 for each additional person.

Participants in Plus One will receive all IAB emails, surveys, research reports and benefit packages.

INTERNET AD REVENUE REPORTING PROGRAM MAKES IMPRESSIONS

The IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Reporting Program is making news. Many leading publications have used the report as a valuable resource. The Wall Street Journal, PC Week, The New York Times and Newsweek International are among the list of media referencing the information in articles about the growth of Web advertising.

The Internet Advertising Revenue Reporting Program is a tool we’ve created to provide accurate, credible industry information and assist your company in business planning. Information about individual companies is kept strictly confidential.

Second quarter 1997 results will be announced in September.
FEEDBACK
The IAB encourages the active participation of all its members. If you have any comments or suggestions about current or future IAB events and programs, we’d like to know. Please feel free to contact us.
