Mike Zaneis, Executive Vice President of Public Policy at the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), today issued the following statement in response to the EU-U.S. Summit Joint Statement.
“We are pleased that President Obama and the leaders of the European Union have reaffirmed the importance of a vibrant internet marketplace by highlighting this issue during today’s EU-U.S. Summit. The ad-supported internet ecosystem has led to the development of thousands of services on which billions of people around the world depend. Nowhere have the economic benefits of the ad-supported internet been more apparent than in the U.S. and Europe, which are home to many of the leading internet companies.”
“Developing an internet governance model and maintaining consumer protections that ensure a secure and open internet are of great importance. However, we must also guard against other threats to this ecosystem, such as countries restricting legitimate cross-border data flows and requiring forced server and data localization. Such policies undermine the global nature of the ad-supported internet, stifle innovation, and restrict international trade. Combatting threats to the ad-supported internet ecosystem requires international cooperation, and we urge the U.S. and EU to take a leading role in setting policies that ensure the continued success of this dynamic marketplace.”
